About Nala, and who makes it
Nala is an iPhone night light and white noise app. I'm Valentin Galmand, a dad, designer and developer in France, and I make it on my own.
Why I built it
When my son was a baby, our 3am setup was a lamp too bright for feeds, a sound machine on the dresser, and my phone in my hand for everything else. I wanted one thing that did all three, quietly. I released the first version of Nala on the App Store in October 2025 and have kept working on it since, based on what parents write to me.
What I am, and what I'm not
I design and build apps for a living. I'm not a doctor, a nurse or a sleep scientist, and nothing on this site is medical advice. When a page talks about light, sound or sleep, I rely on published research and on guidance from health organisations, and I link to them so you can read them yourself. If you're worried about your child's sleep, health or hearing, talk to your pediatrician.
No medical professional currently reviews these pages. If that changes, the reviewer's name and role will appear on the pages they reviewed.
How I write the guides
- Sources first. Every scientific claim links to the study or guidance it comes from, listed at the bottom of the page.
- Say what the research doesn't show. Most light research is on adults or older children, not newborns. When the evidence stops, the page says so.
- Product facts from the app itself. Numbers like the 5% minimum brightness, the 27 sounds or the one-minute fade come from Nala's code, not from marketing copy.
- Dated and corrected. Each guide shows when it was last updated. If you spot a mistake, email me and I'll fix it.
Disclosures
- I make Nala and earn money from it through Nala+, an optional subscription. The pages on this site are written to help you, but they also recommend my app.
- On the comparison of night light apps, the other apps were checked from their public App Store listings, not tested on a phone, and the page says so.
- Nala has no ads, needs no account, and I don't sell data. Details in the privacy policy.
